Thoughts on Sign and Trade

If the Magic agree to a sign and trade with Seattle, we would obviously have to send a player or two that are somewhat fan favorites. From the couple emails I've received and then a few postings on forums across the net, don't believe what you hear about having to give up JJ or anyone else the Magic want to keep. Seattle has zero leverage in any dealings with Lewis. The Magic can sign him without a sign and trade. A trade scenario would simply be courtesy on the Magic's part and a bit of salary dump in order to resign Darko or another free agent. So, the Magic are not going to offer anyone they consider a core part of next years team in order to do Seattle a favor. However, the Magic might through the Sonics a bone just so they get something in return for Lewis. But I can almost guarantee it won't be anyone that the Magic want to keep - it will be players that are disposable for any team.

I think the Magic should definitely try and work a sign and trade deal with Seattle. Keeping Milicic, in my opinion, is almost as important as the acquisition of Lewis. Darko is on his way to being a better Rik Smitz. I think Otis Smith should have handled Darko a little better as well. He's been chatting on the Magic's site all year how important Darko is to team just to shun him come end of season. I didn't quite understand that. He talked in his last chat on the magic site that he's not worried about the draft because he believes that Darko is really Orlando's 2007 daft pick. Letting him go, as it currently seems, makes that statement untrue. I'm not saying I disagree with the moves he's making. But what's so wrong with informing him and putting his nerves at ease. I'd actually try and package Turk and Nelson for Lewis and Ridnour.

Darko is mid-card talent on a heavyweight pay-per-view. I may eat my words if he turns out to be the next Hakeem Olajuwon, but I just don't see it happening. The media and fans are bitching about us overpaying for Lewis, anything over 6, maybe 7 million, would be overpaying for Darko. Right now, until he proves otherwise, he is a MLE pay type guy.

The trade for Lewis and Ridnour doesn't sound half bad to me, though I don't know that the Sonics even want Turk. I'd like to think Nelson will be better under Van Gundy - but I just have a hard time believing that Nelson will end up being that guy that provides the glue for our team.
