The Magic officially signed Keyon Dooling to a three year, $10 million dollar contract today. Dooling spent last year in Maimi as a backup point guard. The signing of Dooling is to provide backup in the point guard and shooting guard rotations. Although Dooling is a decent backup guard, I have to really start questioning the Magic's gameplan.
Dooling has been compared to Steve Francis in a lot of aspects. They are the same height, has the same tendencies to dribble the ball too much and put up questionable shots. Both are not very well known for their passing consistency. The move to sign Dooling has created another problem in our troubled backcourt.
I am all for signing taller point guards. I think our team has lacked height in the past few seasons. But, I believe that having Francis and Dooling together does nothing more than provide us duplicate our problems. First, while both can distribute the ball, neither do a very good job at keeing their teammates involved. Secondly, they are not big enough to play the shooting guard position - in my opinion.
There are also so rumblings as to whether Dooling will becoming off the bench or replacing Jameer Nelson at the starting point guard position. Personally, I think Jameer will be a starter for some team in this league. I hope it is the Magic. The kid definitely has the heart and desire to play and start in this league. I think he is the perfect match for Dwight Howard in that he understands his role. I don't think Steve Francis understands that this is Dwight's team and I am not so certain Dooling will either.
With this signing, we have Dooling, Nelson, Francis, Travis Diener(R) and DeShawn Stevenson this year as guards. A healthy Grant Hill can also provide some relief in that position. With this group, I don't see a lot of defense, aside from when Stevenson shows that he is in fact useful.
I think there are other guards out there, either through free agency or trades, that could have been a better fit for this team. While there can be arguement about whether Dooling is a $3.5 million a year player, I am just plainly stating that we could have filled a gap with that money instead. I'm sure the Magic have a plan, but unless it involves pulling a center or some defensive role players out of a hat, I'm not sure this move is going to produce the results we need.

Good article, I agree totally. I would have much rather seen the magic sign a versatile G/F combo player like the undrafted rookie Kasib Powell. I like this kids game and soon someone will too. whoever misses out is going to be kicking themselves. He is better, less expensive and younger than Dooling. But thats my opinion. Over & OUT!!
It has been painful to witness the off season activity of the Magic. I do not see much help, other than coaching changes and the verdict will be a long way off on that one, but I am hopeful. Perhaps the players we had last year have improved and Grant can keep healthy this year, "perhaps". Looking for a fun year of some good hard basketball.
