As you may have already heard, Paul Silas was released as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Immediately, the organization let it be known they are interested in Flip Saunders. Saunders is a great head coach, one I had hoped the Magic would actively pursue. That leads us to this seasons head coach recruiting.
Nothing against Chris Jent, but he is not anywhere near the solution this team needs. He fills the need of a head coach about as well as Patrick Ewing was going to bring a title to Orlando for Tracy McGrady. John Weisbrod should have made it very clear from the moment they released Johnny Davis that the Magic were in the market for a big name coach.
I think the Magic have learned a valuable lesson from the Charlotte Hornets, now the New Orleans Hornets. For one, just moving a team does not guarantee success. And two, if you don't have momentum of a championship team - the newness eventually wears off.
Charlotte did not want to pay big money to build a new arena for the struggling Hornets. So, the Hornets picked up and moved to New Orleans with great promises. The move has not worked so well as the Hornets are struggling for attendance. As for the city of Charlotte, well, they spent hundreds of millions to lure another expansion team to their town.
The Magic realize that the team needs to be successful in order for any of their options to be rewarding. The trouble with the Magic now will follow them if they don't shape up their losing ways. As of now, the Magic are faced with the city of Orlando getting a clue and hope they dish out the money for a new arena or the Magic pick up and move to a new city. Either way, a big name head coach team is the key to victory - for the team, the Magic ownership, the fans and the city of Orlando.
Let's face it. We have had some great players on this team over the years. However, we have failed miserably when the time has come to jump the last hurdle. Whether it was the one title shot we had with Shaq, or the savior, Tracy McGrady himself - leading the team to mediocrity. The Magic ownership has done just enough to get the few loyal fans to come back each year, but nothing to build upon that loyal fan base.
I buy into the hype every year. I think Juwan Howard is the best free agent we could have signed. I think Patrick Ewing and Horace Grant are going to provide the veteran leadership that brings us a title.
Well, here is the breaking news you have all been waiting for. This Magic fan has gone from optimist to pessimist.
Get me a head coach to lead this team deep into the playoffs for the next 5 years. I don't care how much it costs the organization or how much my ticket prices go up. There is one thing that is as certain as tomorrow is Tuesday, without a big name coach - you won't be guaranteed another ticket purchase from this fan. I can sit in the comfort of my own home and watch mediocrity.
At least then I save myself the frustration of sitting in traffic after another disappointing loss.
