Thoroughly embarassed by the lack of effort, I stayed until the end of the game to watch my team go down in flames. On this website, I spew my comments on why the team is good, why they are bad and everything in between. In person, I defend this team and the players to no end. With the Magic losing last night to the Pacers, 108-104, I am going to cover the facts and then my thoughts.
What I Know
Grant Hill was the only starter to score in double figures. The Magic had a very poor shooting night, missing all kinds of layups - finishing the night at 38%. There were 16 turnovers and only 12 assists. Jameer Nelson was the lone bright spot in the first half, scoring 13 points in the second quarter to help the Magic tie up the game. Starters respond by allowing a 17-0 run by the Pacers. Nelson was the sub of the game for his effort - however he only had 1 assist. In fact, we got 2 assists from our point guards tonight.
What I think
This team has problems. Chemistry, trust, work ethic - I don't know the exact problems but this team is in trouble. I'm going to cover a couple things real quick and that will be the end of it. I'll get ready for the games this weekend and hope the Magic do the same.
First on the list, Kelvin Cato. Coach should have sent Kelvin Cato to the locker room for what I saw. Cato was visibly upset about something, possibly something Coach had to say. Cato has been mouthing off the refs all season. Now he is getting on his teammates and the coach during the game. There is no room for that kind of behavior on this team. Save that for practice or the locker room.
Second, defense. We need guys to play defense. What I saw out there tonight was pathetic. At this point, I don't care if Dwight Howard gets tossed for 2 games because of a flagrant foul. Do something. I harp about Hedo Turkoglu's defense, quick shots and the lack of posting up smaller players - but at least he had a fire lit in him after getting smacked in the face.
Third, everything else. Dwight Howard needs more touches. Howard needs to pass that ball back out if he doesn't have good position. Hedo, you need to slash more. Steve Francis needs to stop the dribbling the clock down. Doug Christie, we know your reputation, time to live up to it. Coach, start showing a little emotion on that sideline and take care of business. Cato, shutup and rebound - that is what you are paid to do. Magic, run. Run the ball every chance you get. Nelson and DeShawn Stevenson need to keep playing hard, at least they care right now.
And lastly, Hill - you are the man. This is not Francis' team. It starts and ends with Hill. The team chose you, we chose you, as the captain of this team. Although the year is not over, and you still feel like your return is a work in progress - this is your team. Run it. Tell Cato to focus and rebound. Tell Howard where to go on the floor. Tell Francis to give up the rock. And most of all, lead this team. Show them how to overcome adversity and win.

Cato was mad because Johnny mistakenly accused him of letting O'Neal go long for that easy layup following a foul. Actually, JO was Dwight's man.
