Billy Donovan to sign with the Magic

Well, according to  just about every major news source in America, Billy Donovan will be announced as the Magic's next head coach. I'm interested to hear what all the other Magic fans think about this. Personally, I'm a bit numb on the whole idea. First, we're getting a great college coach who has never had any pro experience. Past pro tryouts for college coaches have not gone very well. However, getting past that - I think that Donovan might have what it takes. My only problem is the money the Magic are reportedly throwing out there to get him. At $6 million a year, surely there are other coaches with a little more, uhm, playoff experience? After all, isn't that what the Magic are looking for come free agency time? Regardless, I do like that the Magic are being serious with the kind of money they're throwing out there. Maybe, just maybe, we can expect the same thing sometime around July 1st. I sure would like a fancy stretch Rolls-Royce limousine to go along with this new high-paid driver.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

KeepBillyDonovan.com Announces Failure to Generate Enough Support to Keep Billy Donovan as the Florida Gators Basketball Coach. Billy Donovan to be named head coach of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

Tampa, FL May 31stt, 2007 It is with a saddened heart that KeepBillyDonovan.com announces the failure to secure Billy Donovan as basketball coach of the two time defending national champion Florida Gators. Despite Billy’s recent public statements of the contrary, Billy Donovan is leaving the University of Florida to coach the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
KeepBillyDonovan.com, started by a University of Florida graduate Fred Marks, stood for one thing: To persuade University of Florida supporters to do whatever possible to make sure Billy Donovan remains the Gators basketball coach. Launched on Sunday, April 8th, the day before Florida defeated Ohio State in basketball to win back-to-back national titles, KeepBillyDonovan.com served as the headquarters of the Keep Billy Donovan movement. Gator Nation will mourn Billy Donovan’s departure. KeepBillyDonovan.com will remain online so Gator fans can post comments and grieve together.

For additional information on KeepBillyDonovan.com, contact Fred Marks, at 813-376-6535 or visit www.KeepBillyDonovan.com.
ABOUT - KeepBillyDonovan.com was started by a Florida Gator fan with the hope to build enough support amongst the University of Florida alumni and fans to pressure the administration to retain Billy Donovan in Gainesville.

WTF - Billy Donavan is the best coach the Magic could have possibly landed. He is a dynamic young coach who has been a winner everywhere he has gone. Why would you value playoff experience over championships regardless of what level of basketball, which by the way it is not like he was the coach of the Alachua county champs, he coached the three top ten picks in the next NBA draft to back to back national championships at a football school in the South. And why the hell do you care what the Magic spend on the coach $5.5 mm is not that much for an NBA coach - Phil Jackson makes $10 mm and neither count against the cap, so what difference does it make. Don't forget, the Magic paid Doc Rivers $5 mm and we know how that turned out. Billy D will win in Orlando, Orlando will get a new arena and UF fans from all over the state will become Magic fans overnight.

Thanks Fred, great link. With all that has happenend today - you might get your wish afterall.

Mikey, I'm simply stating that at $5.5 million, the Magic are definitely putting money towards getting a solid coach. I, for once, am glad they have made the commitment instead of going on the cheap. But if they were willing to give a college coach with no NBA experience that kind of cash, then why not pony up another million for a proven NBA coach.

And Billy Donovan is the furthest thing from the best coach the Magic could have possibly landed. He barely cracks the top ten on my list of potential candidates - and the only reason he does is because of the hype he would have (and briefly did) generated.
