Game notes - Magic @ Sonics

The Magic lose a tough, close game to the Seatle SuperSonics, 98-90. Late in the third and throughout the fourth, the Magic made small runs to cut the lead down and even tie the game. In the end, they just didn't have enough to take the lead and the game.

There were three things to note with the coaching change. First, the substitution pattern was a lot better. The minutes were more well rounded and players were in/out of the game more - keeping the players fresh. The combination of players used helped control the runs of the other team and our all-around defense was better.

Second, Jameer Nelson was moved back to the bench and DeShawn Stevenson was moved into the starting lineup at shooting guard. With the move, we get more production out of our bench and a little more athleticism in our starting five. I have been waiting all year for Stevenson to get more playing time. I'm not sure whether he is the one we need starting at that position, but he definitely gives us a better look. I know a lot of fans want to see Jameer start, but I really think we're better off when he comes off the bench. Steve Francis is our starting point guard and should be; he is overmatched at the shooting guard position because he lacks good one-on-one defensive skills.

Last, the focus and execution was better. Nothing is going to change over night, but there was more focus from Francis and Kelvin Cato tonight. They spent a lot less time arguing calls then they have. I think Coach commands their respect and gets it. John Weisbrod has to back any Coach we have if they are to get control over this team. While the offense wasn't perfect, there was good spacing and execution tonight. The plays are simple and short. Two or three passes and sharp cuts to the basket. The bigs are getting touches and you can already see the floor starting to open up.

I don't care if the Magic lose the rest of the games this year. I just want to see improvement in their attitude and effort. I have no problem if we lose 10 games in a row by a couple points. I only get irate when we get blown out by the second quarter. The Magic kept the game close all night tonight and earned a little respect back from me. I'm tired of losing, let's get this turned around and rattle off a 9 or 10 game winning streak. Let's go MAGIC!!!
